Environments Unlimited Inc. (EU), recently received the Small Business Excellence Award from the Center for Entrepreneurship at Methodist University in Fayetteville. The award was presented to President John Cockrum and VP Roger McSwain for their unwavering dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction.  Methodist University has presented the award annually since 1988 to companies that are key contributors to the economic stability of the Cape Fear Region.  EU was presented the award at the 34th Annual Stock Market Symposium on March 24th, 2011.

About Us

With rich expertise and experience in the design and construction of environmentally friendly “Green” buildings for use as office, restaurant and retail space, Environments Unlimited (EU) provides clients across the Carolinas with customized commercial buildings of the highest quality and most innovative design features.

Our team of construction professionals has over half a century of collective experience in the industry. EU’s value proposition is simply: our sincere commitment to clients, vendors, employees and the communities we serve enables us to deliver a superior product in which everyone involved can take great pride.

Environments Unlimited is the product of John Cockrum and Roger McSwain, two longtime construction industry professionals who agreed that a collaborative, client-centered approach for creating environmentally friendly commercial spaces was needed in the Carolinas. The two are ably assisted by a five-person staff of financial, project management and administrative professionals who share their unique vision for addressing commercial construction needs in the 21st Century.

John Cockrum
Founder/President

John Cockrum, a native of Burgaw, N.C., first began considering a career in construction while working part-time carpentry jobs during high school. He is a graduate of the B.S. program in Construction Management at East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville. Upon completing his degree in 1996, John returned to Greater Wilmington to begin work as a general contractor. Today, as President of Environments Unlimited, his duties include marketing, business development, community relations and strategic planning.

In addition to his support for the alumni organization at ECU, John is active in Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization founded in 1987 to build housing for low-income residents of Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. He has been on the organization’s Board of Directors, serving as its President in 2007. John is also a founding Board Member for Honor Flight of Southeastern NC, a non-profit organization whose mission is to fly WWII veterans to Washington DC to tour the WWII Memorial at no cost to the veteran. John served as the Flight Director for the organizations second flight in May, 2010.  John also serves on the Board of Directors for the Hanover Seaside Club. John and his wife, Virginia Cockrum, are members of Fifth Avenue Methodist Church in Wilmington. The couple has three sons: Porter, Jack, and their newest addition Fletcher. In addition to golf, hunting and fishing, John is a marathon runner and regularly trains for triathlons. He also enjoys scuba diving among the shipwrecks of coastal North Carolina.

Roger McSwain
Founder/Vice President

As a youth, Roger McSwain lived in a variety of towns across North Carolina, including Rocky Mount and Salisbury. At West Rowan High School, he excelled at football and basketball. Upon graduation, Roger won a full athletic scholarship to North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Raleigh, where he was a starting defensive tackle for the Wolfpack football team. He received a B.S. degree in Animal Science from NCSU in 1972 and considered plans for a career in Veterinary Medicine. But summer construction jobs during college swayed him instead toward a career in building. After relocating to Wilmington, he amassed 30 years of general contracting experience before co-founding Environments Unlimited in 2007. His duties as the firm’s vice president include client service, project management and vendor/sub-contractor relations. Roger and his wife, Kay McSwain, have been married since 1971, and the couple has one son, Derek, and two young grandchildren. Understandably, Roger is an enthusiastic supporter of the N.C. State Wolfpack, rarely missing a home football game. He is also an avid golfer and enjoys deep-sea fishing and travel.

Jeremy Phillips
Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Jeremy Phillips has over ten years experience working with clients from all over the globe with their site selection needs. During his tenure as the Director of Business Development for Wilmington Industrial Development (a regional economic development agency) Jeremy was responsible for client handling and site evaluation. He played a pivotal role in the recruitment of several Fortune 50 companies to the region which include GE Hitachi’s Nuclear Energy World Headquarters and a 1,200+ employee financial services center for Verizon Wireless. These and many other projects involved intensive client handling, site evaluation and tax incentive negotiations.

Jeremy is a native Wilmingtonian and a graduate of UNCW. He is a founding member and current Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for Honor Flight of Southeastern NC, a non-profit organization whose mission is to fly WWII veterans to Washington DC to tour the WWII Memorial at no cost to the veteran. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Brunswick County Economic Development Commission and is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Brunswick County Economic Development Corporation. Jeremy also serves on the Advisory Board of the Small Business Technology & Development Center (SBTDC) a program designed to help foster small business growth administered by the University of North Carolina system. He and his wife Michelle are the proud parents of two young boys. Jeremy enjoys golfing when possible and grilling when hungry.
